Sewage Ejector Pumps

When a basement fixture sits below the point where the sewer leaves the building, gravity stops being an option and a pump takes over. Getting the basin, the vent and the discharge right is most of the job.

Why a fixture ends up below grade

Drainage runs on gravity and on slope. A 3 inch or smaller drain needs a fall of about 1/4 inch per foot to carry solids properly, and that fall has to hold all the way to where the building drain leaves the wall. The elevation of that point decides everything: anything above it can drain by gravity, anything below it cannot.

In plenty of Toronto houses the sewer leaves the footing higher than people assume, particularly where the lateral was set for a shallow city main. Put a bathroom on that basement floor and the fixtures have nowhere to fall to. They drain into a pit instead, and a pump lifts the discharge up into the building drain. That is a sewage ejector.

Before anything gets drawn we take levels off the existing building drain. Sometimes there is more fall available than expected and the bathroom can be plumbed by gravity, which is cheaper to build and has no motor to fail. Sometimes there is not. Either way it is worth settling before the framing goes up.

What a proper installation looks like

An ejector basin is a sealed pit, not an open sump. Sanitary waste is going into it, so the cover is gasketed and bolted down, and the basin is vented back into the building's venting system rather than left open in the basement. Ontario Building Code Part 7 treats the basin as part of the sanitary drainage system for exactly that reason. An unvented basin pushes air and odour past the cover every time the pump runs, and it will not fill or empty the way it should.

Discharge is normally 2 inch, because an ejector is built to pass 2 inch solids and anything smaller defeats the point of choosing one. Above the basin we want a check valve so the column of water does not fall back in, a full-port ball or gate valve above that to isolate the line, and a union or quick-disconnect so the pump can come out without a saw. We are particular about that last fitting because of how many pumps we have cut out of a glued-solid discharge.

A high-water alarm float, set above the pump's start level, costs very little and is the difference between a service call and a wet finished basement. On a commercial basin, or anything serving more than one washroom, it should report somewhere a person will actually hear it rather than to a buzzer in an empty utility room.

Ejector, grinder, or up-flush unit

A standard sewage ejector passes solids through whole on an open impeller. For a basement bathroom with a toilet it is the default, and it is the most forgiving of the three options when something goes down the line that should not have.

A grinder pump macerates waste into a slurry and pushes it through a smaller discharge, commonly 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch, at considerably higher head. It earns its place where the discharge has a long horizontal run or a serious lift, or where a small-diameter route is the only one available. It costs more, draws more current, and the cutter assembly is a wear part. It is not permission to flush things you otherwise would not.

A macerating up-flush unit, the type that sits behind the toilet, is the retrofit answer when the floor cannot be opened: a slab poured over a slab, a heritage floor, or a budget that will not carry excavation and concrete. The trade-offs are real. The unit is in the room with you, so you hear it. It serves a limited number of fixtures, its cutter is small and stops on anything fibrous, and when it fails there is no gravity fallback behind it. We install them where they make sense and say plainly where they do not.

What takes them out of service

Impellers jam on the same short list every time, and wipes lead it. They do not break apart, they wrap around the impeller and the shaft, and once one is caught it catches the next. Grease is slower and quieter: it congeals on the basin wall and coats the float, and a float that cannot swing is a pump that never starts.

Basins also need opening occasionally. A pump that has run for years without anyone lifting the lid is a pump nobody has inspected, and the parts that fail first, the float, the check valve flapper and the alarm, are all things you find by looking.

Then there is access, which gets designed out more often than you would think. We have found basin lids under a tile floor and behind a wall of built-in cabinetry. When that pump fails, and it will, getting to it costs more than the pump does. Leave the cover reachable and leave headroom above it to lift the pump straight out.

What is the difference between a sump pump and a sewage ejector pump?

A sump pump moves clean groundwater from a weeping tile system out to grade, and the pit is open. A sewage ejector moves sanitary waste from below-grade fixtures up into the building drain, so its basin is sealed, gasketed and vented into the plumbing system. They are not interchangeable, and putting a sump pump on a sanitary basin is both a code problem and an odour problem.

Do I need an ejector pump for a basement bathroom?

Only if the fixtures sit below the point where the building drain leaves the wall. We take levels off the existing drain before anything is designed. If there is enough fall to keep 1/4 inch per foot to the exit point, the bathroom can be gravity-drained, which is cheaper and has nothing mechanical to fail. If there is not, a pump is the only way to make it work.

Should I choose an ejector, a grinder pump, or an up-flush unit?

An ejector is the default for a basement bathroom with a toilet and handles solids best. A grinder suits long runs, high lift, or small-diameter discharge, at higher cost and with a cutter that wears. An up-flush unit avoids breaking the floor, which makes it the retrofit choice, but it is noisier, serves fewer fixtures, and has no gravity fallback when it fails.

Why does my basement bathroom smell even though nothing is backing up?

Usually the basin. A cover that is not sealed properly, a failed gasket, a disturbed cord grommet, or a basin that was never vented back into the drainage system will let air out every time the pump cycles. Dried-out floor drain traps are the other common cause. Both are straightforward to identify, and neither one is something to live with.

Can I flush wipes if I have a grinder pump?

We would not. Grinders handle more than an ejector does, but wipes still bind on the cutter and rope together in the basin, and the cutter assembly is a wear part you pay for. Nothing but human waste and toilet paper should go into any ejector or grinder basin. The pumps that get replaced early are almost always the ones treated as a garbage chute.

What maintenance does a sewage ejector need?

Have the basin opened and inspected periodically rather than waiting for the alarm. We check the float for grease and debris, confirm the check valve is holding, test the alarm, look at the seal and the vent connection, and clear anything built up on the impeller. Most of the failures we attend were visible months earlier to anyone who lifted the lid.
