Everything depends on where the sewer leaves the house

First we need the height of the building drain where a new basement fixture would tie in. If the existing main runs deep enough beneath the slab, a new bathroom can drain by gravity like any other, with proper slope and standard fixtures. That is the good outcome and it is worth confirming first.

Plenty of Toronto houses do not give you that. Older neighbourhoods have shallow sewer connections, and any basement lowered by underpinning or benching has a floor sitting close to or below the drain it needs to reach. In those cases gravity is off the table and the fixtures have to be pumped, either through a macerating up-flush unit or a sewage ejector pit. We take that measurement before quoting anything, because it decides the shape of the whole project.

Breaking concrete versus a macerating system

Breaking the slab is the more permanent answer. We saw cut the concrete, break it out, dig the trenches, run new ABS DWV at the required fall, tie into the existing main, backfill and patch. The result is ordinary gravity drainage with standard fixtures and nothing to service afterward.

The honest part is what it costs you in disruption. It is loud for a day or more, and dusty whatever we do with plastic and containment. The spoil comes out of the house by bucket, and the basement is a work site for the duration. The patched slab is structurally fine, and it will always show as a scar if you pull the flooring up.

A macerating or up-flush system is the alternative when the main sits too high or the disruption is not worth it. Far less demolition, a much shorter install, a workable bathroom. In exchange you get a pump with a cutting blade that needs power, needs service eventually, and has hard limits on lift and run. It is also particular about what goes into it, and wipes will jam it whatever the label says. For a powder room used a few times a week it is sensible. For a rental suite bathroom used daily by tenants, gravity drainage is worth the concrete work.

Ejector pits, backwater valves and floor drains

Where the slab is up but the main is still too high, fixtures drain by gravity into a sewage ejector pit and the pump lifts the discharge to the main. The basin gets a sealed lid, a 2 inch vent to atmosphere, and a check valve plus an isolation valve so the pump can be pulled without draining the line back in. We use solids-handling pumps from Zoeller and Liberty. A sewage ejector is not a sump pump, and the two pits must never be cross-connected.

While the floor is open, a backwater valve is worth discussing. It is a normally open valve in the building drain that closes if the municipal sewer surcharges during a storm, which is the mechanism behind most basement sewage backups here. The City of Toronto has run a basement flooding protection subsidy covering part of this kind of work, but the terms change, so check the current program before counting on it.

Floor drains need a trap like any other fixture, and a trap that dries out lets sewer gas into the room. That is what people smell in a basement closed up for a season. A trap primer tied to a nearby fixture keeps it wet. Where a primer is not practical, a jug of water down the drain every couple of months works.

Secondary suites, laundry and load on the existing system

Basement apartments in Toronto are permitted, and plumbing is one part of a larger approval covering fire separation, ceiling height and egress, all outside our scope. We rough in to the drawings, pull the plumbing permit and meet the plumbing inspector. Someone else, usually a designer or permit consultant, leads the overall application, and any plumber offering to handle the whole suite approval is promising something they do not control.

What we do flag is loading. A second kitchen, bathroom and laundry in a house built for one of each puts real demand on the existing stack and water service. An old undersized service shows it as pressure drop the moment two fixtures run at once, and a 3 inch stack that has been fine for decades can behave differently with more fixture units.

Laundry rough-ins are simple but easy to get wrong. A recessed washer box keeps the hoses from being crushed behind the machine, and standpipe height and trap depth are set by code rather than preference. Put a floor drain in the room if you can.

Can I put a bathroom in my basement without breaking the concrete?

Sometimes. A macerating up-flush system mounts above the floor and pumps waste up to the existing drain, so no slab work is needed. It suits a powder room or a light-use bathroom well. It is a pump with a cutting blade, so it needs power, needs occasional service, and has limits on how far and how high it can discharge. For heavy daily use, gravity drainage is the better long-term answer.

How deep do you have to dig for a basement bathroom rough-in?

Deep enough to reach the existing building drain and still hold the required fall back to it, which usually means trenches somewhere between a foot and a few feet below the slab depending on the distance and where the main sits. The toilet connection sets the depth. We confirm the invert of the existing drain before quoting, because guessing that number is how a basement job goes wrong.

Do I need a permit for a basement bathroom in Toronto?

Yes. Adding fixtures or new drainage requires a plumbing permit taken out under a licensed plumbing contractor, with an inspection at rough-in before anything is covered and again at final. If the basement is becoming a secondary suite, the plumbing permit is only one part of a broader approval that also covers fire separation, egress and ceiling height.

What is a sewage ejector pit and do I need one?

It is a sealed basin set into the basement floor that collects waste from below-grade fixtures, with a solids-handling pump that lifts it up to the main drain. You need one when your basement fixtures sit below the point where the sewer leaves the house. If the main is deep enough, you do not, and everything drains by gravity instead.

Should I install a backwater valve?

If your basement has ever taken sewage during a storm, or if the main sewer in your area is known to surcharge, it is worth serious consideration. The valve closes when flow reverses and keeps the municipal sewer out of your basement. It is best installed while the floor is already open for other work. It also needs an accessible cover so it can be inspected and cleaned.

Why does my basement smell like sewage?

Most often a dried out floor drain trap. Basements are dry and cool, the water in an unused trap evaporates over a few months, and there is nothing left blocking sewer gas from the drain. Pour a few litres of water in and see if the smell clears. If it comes back quickly or never leaves, something else is going on and the drain should be inspected properly.
